Ode to the Jing River
The Yangtze River, upon emerging from the Three Gorges and entering its middle reaches through the Jingchu region, is known as the Jing River. The basin is rich in resources, steeped in culture, and marked by a long and notable history.
Yet the Jing River, stretching over four hundred kilometres, is winding and uneven in its flow; historically, it has been one of the most flood‑prone sections of the Yangtze. It has shaped countless lives and stories—through both joy and sorrow.
With water as its overarching theme, this concerto portrays the river’s many faces: torrential floods, peaceful currents, surging waves, and the scenery and life along its banks. It reflects the river’s emotional and historical vicissitudes in a vivid, atmospheric musical narrative.
In contrast to the abstract, gritty harmonic language of the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 3, this fourth concerto is boldly lush and richly melodic. Drawing inspiration from romantic piano concertos, film music, and folk traditions, it aims to be especially accessible to a wide audience.
Structure of the Work
The concerto consists of four movements:
- The Lamentation — A dramatic opening with thunderous timpani and ominous strings, leading to a sorrowful piano lament echoed by the orchestra.
- The Upsurge — Driven by constant pulsation and energetic percussion, with an ethereal middle section featuring flute and solo piano, ending in optimism and hope.
- The Glamour — A folk‑inspired movement built around an original folk‑like melody, including a Latin‑inspired dance and a Viennese waltz.
- The Splendour — A majestic introduction and cadenza lead into a fast, athletic finale. A prominent fanfare and reflective middle section recall earlier themes before a distant, murky coda builds to a triumphant conclusion.
Performance History
This concerto has been performed at numerous major events across the UK, with orchestras including the Berlin Metropolitan Orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North, the Manchester Camerata Orchestra, and the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra. It has also been heard throughout Europe and China.
On 1 August 2025, Yuanfan Yang performed the concerto with the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra at the Yorkshire Calling concert at Bradford Live. At the organisers’ suggestion, the climactic section incorporated a distinctly Yorkshire musical character. Yuanfan wove the theme of the classic Yorkshire folk song On Ilkley Moor into the final passage, intertwining it with the melody of The Waves of Honghu Lake, creating a shared emotional and cultural landscape.
