The Edinburgh-born pianist wins First Prize for his performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 1 alongside the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Geoffrey Paterson. The ninth edition of the biennal James Mottram International Piano Competition took place in Manchester last November. It was entered by almost 100 pianists from all around the world. The Jury chaired by RNCM Head of Keyboard Studies, Graham Scott, said - A total of 27 came to the RNCM to take part in the heats and masterclasses and the level was exceptionally high. On February 4th, 2025, Yuanfan Yang held his debut fully improvised concert at St. Mary’s Perivale Church in London. For this groundbreaking event, the audience was invited to suggest themes or famous works by any composer, and Yuanfan crafted original pieces of music on the spot, based on their ideas.

Yuanfan Yang began the opening recital of the season with a pleasing account of Mozart’s Sonata in C (K.330), spirited and crystalline in its outer movements and poetically rapt in its charming slow movement.

“...[Yuanfan’s compositions] are vividly programmatic, relating to waves, the sinking sun and a haunted bell, and ranging in mood from splashy virtuosity to a soulful poignancy impressive in one so young".
— Fiona Maddocks, The Guardian on Yuanfan Yang's Aquarelles, from his debut CD album 'Watercolour'
“...exceptionally fine for a pianist of any age...brilliantly executed, beautifully organised, breathless in its excitement and deeply affecting in its sentiments".
— International Piano Magazine, November 2016
on Yuanfan Yang's recital at the Gartner Auditorium, Cleveland Museum of Art in August 2016
“[Yang's] dazzling Schumann Carnaval and Liszt Vallee d'Obermann rivalled those of the young Ashkenazy.”
— International Piano Magazine, November 2016
on Yuanfan Yang's recital at the Gartner Auditorium, Cleveland Museum of Art in August 2016
How would I describe Yuanfan Yang’s musical style and personality? First and foremost, I am attracted to his exceptional ear for harmony and colour which is always directed to a wide-ranging audience. As the Concerto reveals, the content is always rich, adventurous and deeply sophisticated. The fusion of romantic and contemporary style is not only pleasing and skilful, but highly distinctive. Such compositional virtuosity is mirrored in Yuanfan Yang’s piano playing. As we would say in the UK, he is a ‘rare bird’!
— Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood CBE Principal of the Royal Academy of Music,
from his preface to Yuanfan's Piano Concerto No. 1 - The Wilderness
Writing music has always been a central part of his creativity, daily musical concerns and artistic motivations. This in itself is highly unusual today a young pianist of such talent and ability.
— Dr Murray McLachlan Chairman of the European Piano Teachers' Association UK (EPTA UK),
from his preface to Sailing into a Sea of Sound
“a giant of the keyboard”
